July featured the work of Chuck Smart.

World-traveled Artist to Debut New Works  In his first solo appearance since garnering acclaim earlier this year, artist Chuck Smart will be showing new and newly-released work this July at Silverdale’s own Old Town Custom Framing and Gallery. In February, Smart’s “ Garden of Eve” was selected for Best of Show honors from among entries submitted in a state-wide competition presented by Collective Visions Gallery in Bremerton. Smart’s work has been selected for shows across the country and as far a-field as Swaziland.

As an artist and musician, Smart has traveled nearly every continent of the world – performing, collaborating, recording, studying, conducting research and collecting instruments. He has conducted workshops in ethnomusicology; produced, engineered and hosted jazz radio programs; and directed various performance ensembles. For more than a decade now, he has immersed himself in visual imagery born of the rhythms that have infused his life and travels.

Throughout his career, Smart has been known as an intuitive thinker and for thinking “outside the box,” both musically and artistically. This is evident in his newest body of work which is at once raw and sophisticated, at once serene and a cacophony color and rhythm. In much the same way that Smart seeks out the air between notes in order to add a note or combination of notes that will create a unique and never before heard sound, so too in his visual art does he wait and “listen” to his work for that intuitive inspiration that might call for a single serene triangle above a swirling vortex. This newest showing of work is entitled “Zoo York: Graffiti Series.”
